How it works

Since 2023, pharmacists in Ontario have been able to assess and prescribe for a defined list of common conditions β€” and that list was expanded on 1 July 2026 to 28 conditions.

It means that for the things below, you don't need to wait for a doctor's appointment or sit in a walk-in clinic. Come in, describe what's going on, and one of our pharmacists will assess you privately. If a prescription is appropriate, we write it and fill it before you leave.

The assessment is free with a valid Ontario health card. You pay only for the medication itself, exactly as you would with any prescription.

Please call ahead on (519) 738-2400 where you can β€” it lets us make sure a pharmacist is free when you arrive.

The 28 conditions we can treat

What pharmacists can't treat

We'd rather be straight with you than have you make a wasted trip. Some things people often assume are on the list are not β€” including strep throat and sore throats, ear infections, bronchitis and chest infections, and dental problems.

If what you have falls outside the list, or if your symptoms suggest something more serious, we'll tell you plainly and point you to a doctor or urgent care. And if you're not sure which side of the line you're on, just call and ask.

What to bring

Frequently asked

Does it cost anything?

The assessment is free with a valid Ontario health card β€” the province covers it. You pay only for the medication if one is prescribed, the same as any prescription.

Do I need an appointment?

Not strictly, but calling ahead on (519) 738-2400 is worth it so we can have a pharmacist ready for you rather than keeping you waiting.

Can a pharmacist prescribe antibiotics?

Yes, for eligible conditions β€” for example antibiotic drops for bacterial pink eye, or antibiotics for an uncomplicated urinary tract infection β€” where the assessment shows it's appropriate.

Can you treat my sore throat or strep?

No β€” sore throat and strep throat are not on Ontario's minor ailments list, so a pharmacist can't assess or prescribe for them. You'd need to see a doctor or visit a walk-in clinic.

Do I have to be a regular customer?

No. Anyone with a valid Ontario health card is welcome, whether you fill prescriptions with us or not.

Is it private?

Yes. The assessment happens away from the counter, and everything you tell us is confidential.

Not sure if we can help?

Call and describe what's going on β€” we'll tell you honestly whether it's something we can treat, or whether you need a doctor.
